Dear brothers and sisters,

On the seventh Sunday of Pascha, the Sunday between the Ascension of the Lord and Pentecost, the Church commemorates the Holy Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council. This place in the Church calendar is not accidental. During the Paschal season we confess the Risen Christ; after the Ascension we glorify the Divine Son, who raised our human nature to the right hand of the Father; and now the Church reminds us that it is essential to know Whom we confess as our Lord and Savior.

The First Ecumenical Council took place in Nicaea in the year 325. It was convened when the Church faced the dangerous false teaching of Arius, who claimed that the Son of God is not true God, but only the highest of created beings. At first glance, this may seem like a distant theological dispute. In reality, however, it concerned the very foundation of our faith and salvation.

In response to this false teaching, the Holy Fathers of the Council confessed that the Son of God is “God of God, Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not made, of one essence with the Father.” With these words, the Church clearly rejected the Arian teaching that the Son of God was created. The Council testified that Christ is not part of creation. He is true God, begotten of the Father before all ages, not made, and for this reason He truly unites humanity with God, conquers death, and grants us eternal life. This is the very faith we confess each time we recite the Creed at the Divine Liturgy and in our private prayers.

For this reason, the commemoration of the Holy Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council in this particular place of the Church year has special importance. The Church tells us that the joy of Pascha is founded not only on feeling, but on truth. Christ rose not as one of many people over whom God performed a miracle, but as the Lord Himself, the Author of life and immortality, true God and true Man.

This year, on the same day, we also commemorate Saints Cyril and Methodius, Equal-to-the-Apostles and Teachers of the Slavs, and celebrate the Day of Slavic Literacy and Culture. Their apostolic labor is also closely connected with the confession of the faith. They did not simply create an alphabet and translate liturgical books. They gave the Slavic peoples the opportunity to hear the Word of God, to pray, and to confess the Orthodox faith in a language they could understand.

Saints Cyril and Methodius showed that the faith must not only be preserved in dogma, but also handed on to people through the living word. Through their work, the Gospel, divine services, and Church culture became native and close to millions of people. Through literacy, translation, and Christian enlightenment, they helped entire nations enter into the life of the Church.

Thus, on this day two important themes come together: the purity of the Orthodox faith and the transmission of this faith to others. The Holy Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council preserved the truth about Christ, and Saints Cyril and Methodius carried this truth to the peoples through word, book, and prayer.

May this Sunday help us preserve the Orthodox faith with gratitude — not only as an inheritance from the past, but as a living truth by which we ourselves must live and which we must pass on to our children, our families, and all who seek the path to Christ.

Возлюбленные о Господе братья и сестры!

В седьмую Неделю по Пасхе, в воскресенье между Вознесением Господним и Пятидесятницей, Церковь вспоминает святых отцов Первого Вселенского Собора. Это не случайное место в церковном календаре. В пасхальный период мы исповедуем Воскресшего Христа, после Вознесения прославляем Божественного Сына, вознесшего человеческую природу одесную Отца, и именно теперь Церковь напоминает нам: очень важно знать, Кого именно мы исповедуем как Господа и Спасителя.

Первый Вселенский Собор состоялся в Никее в 325 году. Он был созван тогда, когда Церковь столкнулась с опасным лжеучением Ария, который утверждал, что Сын Божий не является истинным Богом, а только высшим творением. На первый взгляд, это может показаться далёким богословским спором. Но на самом деле речь шла о самом основании нашей веры и нашего спасения.

В ответ на это лжеучение святые отцы Собора исповедали, что Сын Божий есть «Бог от Бога, Свет от Света, Бог истинный от Бога истинного, рожденный, несотворенный, единосущный Отцу». Этими словами Церковь ясно отвергла арианское учение о том, будто Сын Божий был сотворен. Собор засвидетельствовал: Христос не является частью творения. Он - истинный Бог, рожденный от Отца прежде всех век, а не сотворенный, и именно поэтому Он может по-настоящему соединить человека с Богом, победить смерть и даровать нам жизнь вечную. Именно эту веру мы исповедуем каждый раз, когда читаем Символ веры за Божественной литургией и в наших келейных молитвах.

Поэтому память святых отцов Первого Вселенского Собора именно в этом месте церковного года имеет особую важность. Церковь как бы говорит нам: радость Пасхи основана не только на чувстве, но на истине. Христос воскрес не как один из людей, над которым Бог совершил чудо, но как Сам Господь, Начальник жизни и бессмертия, истинный Бог и истинный Человек.

В нынешнем году на этот же день приходится память святых равноапостольных Мефодия и Кирилла, учителей Словенских, а также День славянской письменности и культуры. Их подвиг тоже тесно связан с исповеданием веры. Они не просто создали письменность и перевели богослужебные книги. Они дали славянским народам возможность слышать Слово Божие, молиться и исповедовать Православную веру на понятном им языке.

Святые Кирилл и Мефодий показали, что вера должна быть не только сохранена в догматах, но и передана людям живым словом. Благодаря их труду Евангелие, богослужение и церковная культура стали родными для миллионов людей. Через письменность, перевод и просвещение они помогли целым народам войти в жизнь Церкви.

Таким образом, в этот день соединяются две важные темы: чистота православной веры и передача этой веры людям. Святые отцы Первого Вселенского Собора сохранили истину о Христе, а святые Кирилл и Мефодий понесли эту истину народам через слово, книгу и молитву.

Пусть эта Неделя поможет нам с благодарностью хранить Православную веру — не только как наследие прошлого, но как живую истину, которой мы должны жить сами и передавать нашим детям, нашим семьям и всем, кто ищет путь ко Христу.
