Holy Royal Passion-Bearers
July 17 @ 8:30am – Matins & Divine Liturgy

The Holy Royal Martyrs of Russia—Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra, and their children Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei—were brutally murdered alongside their faithful servants in Ekaterinburg in 1918. Yet in the eyes of the Church, theirs was not simply a political tragedy, but a martyrdom — a sacrifice offered in quiet faith, in love for Christ, and in deep humility.

They are venerated by the Russian Orthodox Church as saints, not because of worldly power, but because they bore their suffering with prayer, patience, and surrender to the will of God. In the darkness of imprisonment, they lit the lamp of faith. In the face of humiliation, they remained gentle and forgiving. And in the final moments of their lives, they bore witness to a Kingdom not of this world.

The Russian Orthodox Church Abroad glorified them as passion-bearers in 1981, and the Moscow Patriarchate followed in 2000. Since then, their memory has become a wellspring of repentance and spiritual renewal across the Orthodox world.

To the faithful, the Royal Martyrs are more than historical figures. They are intercessors. Icons of Christian family life. Beacons of quiet strength in the face of persecution. In their lives, we see the heart of Holy Russia—faithful, suffering, and radiant with grace.

Their martyrdom reminds us that no suffering is wasted when it is united to Christ. Through their prayers, may we too be strengthened in faith, purified in love, and drawn closer to the mercy of God.
