Holy noble princes BORIS AND GLEB

The Holy Princes Passion-Bearers Boris and Gleb (in Holy Baptism Roman and David) are the first Russian saints canonized by both the Russian and Constantinople Churches. These are the younger sons of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir (+ July 15, 1015). Born shortly before the Baptism of Rus'. Both brothers were brought up in Christian piety, received a good education: they read the Holy Scriptures, the works of the holy fathers and the lives of the saints. Both brothers were distinguished by mercy and kindness of heart, they were merciful and sympathetic to the poor, the sick, the destitute.

Even during the life of his father, Saint Boris received Rostov as an inheritance. And Gleb is Murom. After the death of Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir, his eldest son Svyatopolk, who was at that time in Kyiv, declared himself the Grand Duke of Kyiv. None of the brothers wanted to go to war against the elder and disbanded the squads. However, Svyatopolk did not believe their sincerity. And he ordered to kill first Boris and then Gleb. They, like the martyrs of the first centuries of Christianity, courageously faced death. Boris - at the morning service on Sunday, July 24, 1015 in his tent on the banks of the Alta River. And then Gleb at the mouth of the Smyadyn River, not far from Smolensk.

Both brothers preferred death rather than war with their elder brother. The life of the holy martyrs was sacrificed to the main Christian good deed - love. "Whoever says, 'I love God,' but hates his brother, is a liar" (1 John 4:20). The holy brothers did something that was still new and incomprehensible to pagan Rus', accustomed to blood feud - they showed that evil cannot be repaid with evil, even under the threat of death. “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul” (Matthew 10:28).

Святые благоверные князья-страстотерпцы Борис и Глеб (в святом Крещении — Роман и Давид) — первые русские святые, канонизированные как Русской, так и Константинопольской Церковью. Это младшие сыновья святого равноапостольного князя Владимира (+ 15 июля 1015). Родившиеся незадолго до Крещения Руси. Оба брата были воспитаны в христианском благочестии, получили хорошее образование: читали Священное Писание, творения святых отцов и жития святых. Оба брата отличались милосердием и сердечной добротой, были милостивы и отзывчивы к бедным, больным, обездоленным.

Еще при жизни отца святой Борис получил в удел Ростов. А Глеб - Муром. После кончины равноапостольного князя Владимира, старший сын его Святополк, бывший в то время в Киеве, объявил себя великим князем Киевским. Ни один из братьев против старшего войной идти не хотели и распустили дружины. Однако Святополк не поверил их искренности. И приказал убить сначала Бориса а потом и Глеба. Они подобно мученикам первых веков христианства, мужественно встретили смерть. Борис - за утренней службой в воскресный день 24 июля 1015 года в своем шатре на берегу реки Альты. А после и Глеб в устье реки Смядыни, неподалеку от Смоленска.

Оба брата предпочли смерть, нежели войну со старшим братом. Жизнь святых страстотерпцев была принесена в жертву основному христианскому доброделанию — любви. «Кто говорит: «Я люблю Бога», а брата своего ненавидит, тот лжец» (1 Ин. 4, 20). Святые братья сделали то, что было еще ново и непонятно для языческой Руси, привыкшей к кровной мести — они показали, что за зло нельзя воздавать злом, даже под угрозой смерти. «Не бойтесь убивающих тело, души же не могущих убить» (Мф. 10, 28).
